Research for video.

Big philosophy influences:

Marshall McLuhan and his "Medium is the Message"

This helped us develop ideas around what kind of medium it may be and the concept of an extension of memory.
Finding the memory subject within the digital age very intriguing
Extracting the memory from the body and mind when it has passed away, but the memory says on and is passed on through generations.

Baudrillard had a part in our video concept as he commented: 'Contemporay media including: television, film, print and the Internet which are responsible for blurring the line between goods that we need and goods for which a need is created by commercial images'

Have our minds become too caught up in technology that we will now remember more about what we had, not what we should remember such as family, friends and nature.

This is a video of Dr. Alan How explaining a bit on who Baudrillard was and what Baudrillard did.

Film:

"Blade Runner" which is about creating an artificial memory and planting it into robots so  they believe to be human as they have all these memories of their childhood.

Connecting the subject to a play called "The End" which works around the idea that the world is coming to an end and every human is given a specific amount of data which they can use to fill with information that they would like the future generations to know about them, or what they would like to remember of
themselves.

Link to The End

what does film say about us, what does this information mean among other information
how do we choose to use it
how do we want to present ourselves
is memory something you can just record on film, can you separate it from the body, will it be useful
how much can one express oneself through such a medium, will it be real or will people fake and lie about it because they don't want people to actually see their life in a deeper meaning
what will happen to this piece of information in the field on Internet
can we transfer our conscious online (the subject for some theorists)

My personal BIG time influence for my part of the video was Viktor Mayer-Schönberger.
“We have to assume that anything we say or do online will be available for decades” - Quote
I am fond of this quote as it relates to the meaning of our video, that we will not be around for long, but this piece of small data will keep for decades to be shared, lost or locked away.

Here is a link to him explaining the theory of how the world is with memory today. I liked the part where he is saying that people have more memories now, they have more data within their lives because it is all based around technology, this builds up our memory to another level, they are permanent memories that you can visually look at in front of you. He says that now people are useless and getting worse at forgetting which is a natural instinct to remember and to forget. He says that we have to for our sakes train to forget as its harder now with technology. Our brains are taking on too much so forgetting is sometimes a good thing. 'Less clutter'.

The final cut movie

The Final Cut is a film which considers what the world would be like if we had the option to implant a ‘Zoe chip’ in our baby’s head. This chip would then record every second of life through the person’s own eyes. Upon the person’s death this chip would then be removed, edited by a ‘cutter,’ in accordance to the wishes of the family and used within a ‘rememory’. The characters within this film, consider this a way of preserving important memories.
